Home Closing Checklist SEASONAL RESIDENTS (and any resident leaving for more than a week during Hurricane Season, June 1 to November 30) Make these final preparations before you leave: Shut off water at main supply. Ask for assistance from Hutchinson House Staff if you do not know how. Refrigerators should be left turned off and the door(s) propped open. OR if you want to leave NON PARISHABLE items like cereals, crackers and pastas, and boxed seasonings, place inside the refrigerator with temp set on LOW. Discard any items whose expiration dates will have passed before you return. Remove all furniture/plants/doormats/hanging items from outside area. Leave a key with a resident, friend or family member who can check on your unit. (Some residents have their cleaning company do it.) Leave your alternate phone number; E-mail address and cell phone number (if you wish) with the Manager. Check that you have left a current, working door entry key(s) with the office. Close and lock all patio doors and secure windows tightly. Close jalousie louvers and any roll-down storm shutters. Close drapes, curtains and lower blinds to keep out flying objects. Place towels or other absorbent material at doors to absorb storm water. Place fragile objects away from windows in closet or bathroom. Computers should be placed on a shelf and covered in heavy plastic. Food storage: Dry food items e.g. flour, sugar, bread crumbs and the like are to be in sealed containers. Dispose of all garbage. Reminder: Dumpsters are for household garbage only. Pull electrical plugs on all appliances, TV's and radios. Clean disposal with a batch of ice cubes, followed with a solution of baking soda and water. Stoppers should be closed to prevent traps from evaporating. Put a cup of CLOROX in each toilet bowl and cover bowl with saran wrap to prevent water from evaporating. In addition, all drains should be plugged or covered. Shut off electrical power at circuit breaker for hot water tank. To help prevent mold in case of a long power failure, pull furniture away from walls to allow air to circulate. Also open all drawers slightly for ventilation and leave closet doors open. Dispose of live plants or leave them with a neighbor or a service. Having someone to come in and water them adds moisture to the air. In addition, with your shutters closed, the plants will not get enough light. Set air conditioning unit at 78 degrees. If you want the air conditioner off, you should place a dehumidifier in each bathtub; this will keep the apartment dry. If you have a humidistat, it should be set at 65-70 %. Take an updated list of HH residents and have a resident contact person you can call for updates. If you leave a car on the property, arrange for a friend or neighbor to have a key for it in case the vehicle must be moved. Management or staff will not do this. Change smoke detector batteries and unplug remote doorbells. BIKES and other personal items are not to be left outside. Secure in your unit or storage area. Take pictures or a video of the inside of your unit, and make a list of valuable items |
